The UMCC is one of the oldest racing clubs in Northern Ireland. The club is affiliated to the BRCA, and some of our members regularly make the journey to compete in National meetings in the UK. As a club, it is our intention to cater for as many racers as possible and, in doing so, help to develop the sport in this region. Radio controlled model car racing covers a vast array of classes and abilities. The cars range from the “ready to go” variety you see in toy and catalogue shops, through to the top of the range chassis only kits such as Associated, Schumacher,Tamiya, and Xray etc designed specifically for competition use. At present we race 1/10th scale touring cars that compete in either a Pro-stock class with a motor limit of 13.5t brushless or Blinky mode. The most popular class is the Tamiya Mini which provides inexpensive, highly competitive racing and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Then somewhere in-between we have the Tamiya TT02 class which is well attended and as you can imagine offers racing at a speed between the mini’s and touring cars. In the summer months we race outdoors at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre in Ballymoney on our purpose built track.

During the winter months racing moves indoors to the sports hall at Wellington Colleague, BT8 3HE Belfast. A couple of years ago the club purchased carpet which is purpose made for the RC industry, this gives incredible grip indoors similar to that experienced on tarmac, this has made the indoor series very competitive, with a vey good turn out of drivers.

Most beginners start by driving their new “toy” around the garden or on the street. After a while they get tired of this – what they need is some competition. This is where a local model car club, such as ours, can help. We are actively involved in the organization of a number of outdoor championships that are contested from April to September. These include both club and national competitions, which can in turn lead to qualification for European and World Championships. Radio control car racing is a sport that is open to all, no matter what age, and while it has a predominantly male following, girls are not precluded from getting involved as well!
